Social media is a great way to connect with friends, and even make new friends along the way.
Which is why it can become a distraction and limit the time you spend on anything else, including work.
As time passes, you find yourself feeling unhappy, exhausted and distracted.
It is time to make a change.
While being on social media can have benefits, sometimes it's time to take a break, especially when you exhibit the following reactions:
1) You're getting jealous of your friends
You love your friends a lot, and while you make sure to like all their posts, you can't help wondering why do they have so many exciting posts? How are they able to find time to go to those interesting places? Why is their life so much better and more adventurous than yours?
It doesn't matter that those posts may have come after some time or the posts are scheduled or maybe your friend was going through a rough patch and their family took them out yo cheer them out, when you see their smiling faces, instead of being happy for your friend, if you've begun to resent them, its time to unplug from social media and take a hold of your feelings.
Once you process and understand your feelings, it's time to reconnect with your friends but not necessarily on social media.
2) You're more focused on someone else's food pic than your own.
The most popular posts appear to be about food pictures. Your friend may have gone to an exotic restaurant and taken various photos of the food, and suddenly, you begin to wonder why you are eating something boring and bland.
Maybe you even forgot to get food while you check out new recipes and food photos.
Did you even buy groceries for your next meal, or have you only been liking other people's posts?
3) You're up all night checking latest updates rather than sleeping
It's time to go to bed, but checking a post from your favourite celebrity isn't going to take too much time, is it?
But that celebrity has a movie coming up, and their profile is full of fun promotional videos.
Five minutes have turned to half an hour as you check out the other links related to that celebrity.
Soon, it is almost an hour and then more as you constantly check your phone for more gossip, more news, more funny memes.
It is time to choose a good night's sleep over social media.
4) You spend time watching other people live their lives instead of making your own memories
Your friend is on vacation and posting photose every day. You can't stop checking out their page and daydreaming and looking at other friends on social media and see what they are up to.
Meanwhile, you've spent the whole day in front of your computer and forgetting the work or project you need to submit urgently.
Maybe you had planned a shopping trip and cancelled it because the shop has now closed for the day.
It's time to switch off the computer and phone, head out, and live your life to the fullest.
5) You worry more about your image on social media than in real life.
It's probably been a while since you updated your profile pic. Your friends have been asking to see a recent photo too.
But there is no way you're going to take a casual photo. And so you spend the entire day picking out the perfect backdrop and the perfect outfit.
Eventually, you get the perfect pic and post it online.
Your post is flooded with likes and comments. And you are reading them while dressed in a stained shirt and mussed up hair.
When you realize that you have been showing your best side only on social media than real life, it is time to unlug from social media.
6) You care more about taking picture of foods rather than enjoying it
This is a frequent problem with people obsessed with social media. They have to post a photo of their meals.
But to take a perfect photo, you need to have perfect lighting and perfect angle.
Eventually, your food has turned cold and doesn’t taste that good.
It is time to realize that no one is that interested in your meal of the day, and you shouldn't feel the compulsion to post every photo of every meal.
7) You adopt other people's opinions rather than forming your own
You used to have your own opinions where entertainment, and politics is concerned.
But now it is safer to borrow other people's opinions. They don't like a politician? Then neither do you.
The book you thought was great but is being panned by other readers? Maybe you didn't like it too.
It's easy to lose your identity sometimes, and so it is time to unplug and find out what you truly like and dislike.
8) You have been checking social media first thing in the morning and last thing at night rather than talk to your loved ones.
Your friends and family may be around you, but you find yourself constantly checking out social media to see what your online friends are up to. Greetings are exchanged and you start chatting.
While it is okay to talk to your online friends, ignoring people in your life isn’t such a great idea.
These are the people who are going to be there for you when you need them. So, do appreciate the people who are physically there for you.
9) You use your free time on social media rather than read the book you bought months ago
It's a challenging day at work or you're working on an assignment and need a small break. Rather than indulge in a hobby or go for a walk or even read a book, you find yourself checking social media posts.
While it's okay to take a quick glance, if you find yourself doing only that and giving up on constructive hobbies, maybe it is time to unplug and focus on the world around you.
Better yet, learn meditation to regain focus and find peace.
10) You keep clicking on ads gor things you don't need and buy them.
Once you're online, you will be subjected to dozens of ads on pretty much every website you visit.
Since shopping appears to be convenient online (any item is just a few clicks away), you may find yourself exceeding your monthly budget on things you don't need.
Just because it's on sale or has an attractive banner or is being touted as the next best item to own, doesn't necessarily mean you actually require it.
In fact, advertisements are designed to make you want to take a look if not actually buy it.
Once the link directs you to an online store, customer reviews (sometimes there are fake ones intermixed) can convince you to buy the product.
If you truly care about the size of your wallet, why not unplug for a while and just take a break?
