Video games have been entertaining us for a long time, and over the years, the stories and gameplay have evolved. Better stories mean that these games can now be adapted into movies.


Here are some of the movies released in the past few years that have been adapted into movies.


While some were well-received by fans, others received flak for not sticking to the games and removing elements that connected fans to the games in the first place.


1) Assasins Creed


The movie was highly anticipated when it was first announced. But when it was released, fans were disappointed. 

The movie didn't follow the story of any of the games and expected the audience to already be familiar with the basic concepts that were confusing for some.

The movie was about a man called Callum, exploring the memories of his ancestor, who was an assassin so that he could absorb his skills.

The movie starred Michael Fassbender and Jeremy Irons.


2) The Super Mario Bros. Movie


The highest grossing movie of 2023 is based on a well-loved video game, Super Mario.

Every nineties kid must have played this Nintendo game, and the nostalgia must have pulled crowds to the theatre.

The movie may have received negative reviews, but it was a huge box office hit.

The movie was about two brothers, Mario and Luigi, who are plumbers but get pulled into the battle in the Mushroom Kingdom.

This animated movie features the voices of Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy.


3) Tomb Raider


This action adventure game is considered one of the bestselling games, and its protagonist, Lara Croft, is deemed a cultural icon.

In 2001, Angelina Jolie played the role of Lara Croft. The movie was a financial success, and the actress was praised for her portrayal of Lara Croft, but the story was criticised for being weak.

The story was about Lara Croft trying to obtain ancient artefacts.



4) Sonic the Hedgehog 


This blue Hedgehog is the fastest one you will ever see. Sonic the Hedgehog was released in 1991 and became popular enough to spawn animated features, comics, and movies.

In 2020, a movie adaptation starring James Marsden and Jim Carrey was well-received and was a box office hit.

The critics appreciated the acting but not the screenplay.

The story was about a police officer who must save a blue Hedgehog from Dr Robitnik who wants to perform experiments on Sonic.



5) Resident Evil


Released in 1996, Resident Evil is the highest grossing horror franchise. The game was a bestseller upon release and since then been adapted in movies and television series, as well as expanded into comics and novels, too.

The story is about surviving in a world that is overrun by zombies as a result of experiments conducted by the Umbrella Corporation.

A movie adaptation came out in 2002, starring Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez. It received mixed reviews but managed to fare well at the box office.

The movie was about Alice joining a group of commandos to contain an outbreak of the virus that has turned several into flesh-eating zombies.


6) Prince of Persia


This franchise has seen many ups and downs. Before it was sold to Ubisoft, it was a critically acclaimed game with very slow sales.

After being acquired by Ubisoft, it rebooted the series, and the first game to release was The Sands of Time. 

Ever since, the game has been much talked about, and it has been considered one of the best games. 

In 2010, a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal was released, which was a success but received mixed reviews, which led to the cancellation of the sequel.


7) Mortal Kombat


This franchise, which was released in 1992, became the highest grossing media franchise of all time.

The characters became iconic as well as their fighting styles.

A movie adaptation was released in 1995 and was a financial success although its sequel wasn't received well.

It was then rebooted in 2021, and the movie attained success. 

The movie was about an MMA fighter finding out he has been chosen to fight against the enemies of the Outworld.

The movie starred Lewis Tan and Joe Taslim.


8) Silent Hill


This franchise is a horror survival game that was released in 1999. It was a success with players and critics who praised it for being scary and having elements of psychological horror.

In 2006, a movie adaptation was released and was criticised by reviewers who thought the plot was too muddled. 

However, years later, several critics believe the movie to be a good adaptation.

The movie was about a woman called Rose who got into an accident while travelling with her daughter Sharon. When she wakes up to find Sharon missing, she enters a town called Silent Hill to look for her.


9) Uncharted


This adventure game series was praised by reviewers for having good graphics, story, and voice acting. It also comes into the category of bestselling video games. 

In 2022, a movie adaptation starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg was released, which was an instant box office hit.

The story was about a man called Nathan Drake, recruited by Sully to find the failed treasure of the Magellan Expedition.


10) Hitman


In 2000, a stealth videogame called Hitman: Codename 47 was released that won over both critics and players. The game sold millions of copies and was called a masterpiece.

Several games were released after with the latest one releasing in 2022.

In 2007, Timothy Olyphant played the titular character in the movie adaptation of the hit game.

The movies was a box office hit despite negative reviews which cancelled plans for a sequel.

However, the movie was rebooted in 2015 which was received negatively and criticised for not being faithful to the source material.
