Why should kids have all the fun?


As we grow up, we get caught up in our daily tasks, work pressures, and social commitments, that we forget to take a break and relax. While there are plenty of activities to do, nothing beats sitting in a comfortable seat, or a bed, and curled up with a good book.


There are several good mysteries and romance novels out there, but few stories for adults that help in unwinding.


Just because you’re an adult, it doesn’t mean you can’t pick up a kid’s book and read it.


There are several books that were written for children but can be enjoyed by adults too.

1) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl


If you love chocolate and quirky characters, then this book is for you. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a sweet tale about a poor boy finding the golden ticket in a chocolate bar that allows him to participate in a competition of who is going to inherit Willy Wonka’s factory.

Of course, Charlie doesn’t know he and the other four kids are part of the competition.

As one by one the kids get eliminated, the factory workers, the Oompa Loompas, provide entertainment with their mischievous songs.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of those stories that you will cherish forever and read over and over.


2) A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket


This may have not been written for kids in the first place. In fact, the author’s name isn’t even Lemony Snicket.

Written by Daniel Handler the series consists of thirteen books. The story is about three children, Violet, Klaus and Sunny, who lose their parents in a fire. Each of these kids possess a special gift that they must utilize in order to overcome the traps set by their wicked distant relative, Count Olaf.

Count Olaf wants the children’s fortune and since he used to be an actor, he uses clever disguises to deter other relatives from taking guardianship of the children.

The children, however, are cleverer than the adults and see right through the disguises.


3) Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling


When the first book released in this series of seven novels, it took the world by storm. J.K. Rowling is now, perhaps the only billionaire author because of it.

The story is about a boy who lives with his uncle, aunt and cousin. He’s given a room under the stairs and is subjected to constant insult. However, his life changes when he turns eleven and finds out he is a wizard. Not only that, but a powerful dark wizard called Lord Voldemort had murdered his parents and left little Harry with a lightning scar on his forehead.

This fantasy tale is an exciting read and you will not be able to read just one.


4) Coraline by Neil Gaiman


This dark fantasy book is about courage and that too shown by a nine year old girl.


Coraline is a little girl who is curious about her surroundings and ignored by her parents because they are always too busy. One day, she finds a parallel universe and feels comforted by the Other Mother and Other Father until she figures out their sinister plans.


This is a lovely book to read on a rainy day.


5) Fear Street Series by R.L. Stine


While the Goosebumps series are just as entertaining, they can be a little too kiddish. Fear Street on the other hand, doesn’t shy away from malevolent intentions and murder. The mysteries will keep you hooked and you will not figure out the culprit until the very last page.

There are several books in the series, one to suit your tastes.


6) How the Grinch Stole Christmas! By Dr Seuss


Christmas is supposed to be a time for kindness and giving. However, there is that one person who is intent on spoiling everyone’s festive spirit.

Meet the Grinch, who isn’t happy that the people in Whoville are celebrating Christmas. And so, he decides to take away all the things that makes Christmas festive.

The Grinch thinks it’s the presents and decorations. What he learns is that Christmas is much more than that.


This book is written in a rhymed verse and is just as entertaining for adults as it is for kids.


7) Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney


School. It was one of the happiest times of our lives, or probably the most awkward time of our lives.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is about a boy called Greg Heffley who chronicles his life in a diary…journal. He talks about his family and friends, and his exploits at school.

This book is funny and illustrated as well.

Till today, there are seventeen books published in the series with an eighteenth releasing later this year.


8) The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams


While some people argue that it may not be the best book to read to kids, The Velveteen Rabbit is actually a heart touching story about a toy stuffed rabbit who wants to become real. And the only way to do that is by being loved by his owner.

But his owner is a kid and as with all kids, he loves his toys just a little bit more.


9) The Chronicles of Narnia Series by C.S. Lewis


The series contains seven books and the first book follows four children who find a wardrobe that leads them to a magical place called Narnia. These four children must fight a war to save the place and end up becoming kings and queens of Narnia.


10) Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling


Do you know why the Whale only eats small prey? Or why Leopards have spots? Or why the camel even has a hump?


Rudyard Kipling’s delightful stories have been collected in the book called Just So Stories and are an excellent way to simply relax and find humor in these witty tales.
