Top 10 Ways to Deal with Nervousness

There are times in our lives when we must face situations that make us nervous. It could be speaking in front of your class, a job interview, your wedding day, or even the day of a competition.

It just so happens that you feel those butterflies in your stomach. Your palms become sweaty. You bite your fingernails. You fidget with something.

You are nervous, and you don't know how to deal with it.

Here are some ways you can get your nervousness under control.

1) Deep Breaths. Breathing slowly and deeply can greatly benefit you and help settle your nerves.

Close your eyes and take deep, slow breaths. Concentrate on your breathing. It can greatly relieve your stress and relax you.

2) Listening to Music. Get that playlist ready beforehand. Add all your favourite music to it, and right before an event, loosen yourself up by listening to that music.

Perhaps if you can find some alone time, try a quick dance.

3) Aromatherapy. Studies have shown that inhaling certain scents can greatly reduce stress and nervousness. Scents like Rose and Lavender, especially, can help improve your mood and keep the anxiety at bay.

4) Distraction. This may be hard to do when faced with a daunting task that is making you nervous. But distraction may just be the one thing that helps you.

Try watching a funny video or talking to someone about a different topic than the one topic that gives you anxiety.

You will find yourself easing and no longer nervous about the upcoming situation.

5) Talk to someone. A close friend can encourage you to face the situation that is making you nervous. Sometimes, a little bit of encouragement can go a long way to help you tackle a difficult situation.

If you feel that your anxiety is getting out of hand, talking to a therapist can help you deal with anxiety in the long term.

6) Positive Thinking. Get yourself excited. Think of the positives. Telling yourself that you will be able to deal with this situation that will result in a positive outcome can help you overcome your anxiety.

7) Change Focus. Focus on a painting or a funny picture. Look at every detail of a picture, and you will find yourself relaxing and your nervousness abating.

8) Take a walk. Change your scenery. If you find yourself in a tight spot and your nervousness out of control, just make excuses to get out for a few minutes. Take a walk outside or to another room, relax yourself, and then return.

9) Be realistic about your skill levels. We all want to believe that we are the best at everything and can manage any task.

Although it's okay to think positively, do be realistic of your skill set and understand that sometimes all you can do is your best.

The realisation that you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses will help lessen that nervousness inside you.

10) Keep a journal of your thoughts. Write about what makes you scared. Use the journal as a bin where you get rid of all your fears.

Nervousness usually stems from deep-rooted fears, and it is important to figure out what is actually making you nervous.

Writing down your feelings can help you understand yourself and discover what it is that gives rise to anxiety within you when faced with a different task.
