Here's your sandwich. What are you going to put in it?
Sandwiches, salads, and fried food taste amazing when you use a condiment. They enhance the flavour of any food and also make excellent dips.
Over time, we have come to rely on condiments to the point that we can't imagine a good recipe without one.
Here are some of the popular condiments used to make food even tastier.
1) Ketchup: The number one condiment that is pretty much found in every fast food sandwich is ketchup. You even get ketchup satchets thrown into your takeaway bag. Ask for as many as you want, and the server will usually give it to you without a fuss.
Ketchup goes great in fries and tends to be the secret ingredient in some curries and gravy, too.
Ketchup can be found in almost all households, and every popular cuisine is usually served with ketchup.
Of course, you have to take a look at what ketchup you are buying. Although it is supposed to contain tomatoes, vinegar, salt, and pepper, some brands use a lot of sugar and corn syrup. So do read the label before buying a bottle.
2) Mayonnaise: Made out of eggs, vinegar, and spices, this delicious condiment makes any sandwich taste instantly better. A lot of French fries enthusiasts also insist that fries taste better with mayo than ketchup.
It also makes any salad creamy, especially coleslaw. Mayonnaise now comes in varieties like Light Mayo and Garlic Mayo.
Mayonnaise is a little pricier than ketchup though which is why when you ask fast food restaurants to give you a couple of packets and they will either be reluctant or charge you a little extra.
3) Hot Sauce: Spice up your food with hot sauce! Made primarily out of chilli peppers and vinegar, a couple of drops of hot sauce gives your food that tang and spice. Put too much, though, and it will burn your mouth.
4) Mustard: Made out of the seeds of a mustard plant, this delicious condiment was popular used on hot dogs and eaten with pretzels.
It is also used in salad dressings, sandwiches, and on boiled eggs.
5) Sriracha: This pretty much has the same ingredients as hot sauce but is a little thicker. The chillis in it are supposed to be red jalapeño peppers and described as mildly spicy. The condiment became extremely popular and used in chip flavours and other snacks.
Sriracha gives a nice sour and spicy taste to soups and noodles, too.
6) Barbecue Sauce: The ingredients may be the same as ketchup, but barbecue sauce takes things up a notch with its sweetness that comes from brown sugar. Barbecue Sauce also has a nice smoky flavour to make dishes and snacks mouthwatering.
Barbecue Sauce used to be specially for grilled meats but is now used to drizzle on pizzas and nachos and offered as dipping sauce for onion rings.
7) Tahini: Tahini is the brand new addition to the condiments table. Now becoming popular, tahini is a paste made out of sesame seeds. But when thinned down, it makes an excellent dipping sauce. The nutty flavour makes any snack taste exotic.
Tahini is popularly served with falafel and used in making hummus.
8) Chutney: This condiment is popular in most countries. There are various flavours that range from spicy, minty, sour, and sweet.
Chutneys go great with fried foods or to add sandwiches to give it that extra kick.
9) Ranch Sauce: This creamy condiment is made from buttermilk, fresh herbs, garlic, and lemon. Some varieties even contain mayonnaise. Ranch Sauce is used mainly as dipping sauce for fried foods or in salad dressings. This creamy condiment has also made its way into chip flavours.
10) Vinegar: This is the one condiment that goes in every other condiment. It is also used to pickle vegetables. There are different types of vinegars, such as Apple Cider and Balsamic. Vinegar is used in salad dressings and has several health benefits. Balsamic vinegar is used popularly to dip garlic bread in.
The sourness of vinegar gives an aromatic flavour to dishes and enhances their taste.
