What's The Point...of Putting Coffee in the Class System?
Coffee isn’t just a hot beverage that gives you that morning fuel to get the day’s work done. It’s a status symbol. Tell someone you are a coffee drinker, and they are automatically impressed.
Because coffee isn’t just a beverage. Yes, I already said that, but it bears repeating. And here’s why: your choice of beverage determines your personality. If you drink coffee, that means you need the caffeine. It means you lead such a busy life that you need that extra energy just to cope or make it through the day. Your workload is so heavy that without coffee, you would collapse.
Tell anyone you’re a tea drinker and you may just notice a subtle scoff. Tea is considered a relaxing beverage. People automatically assume you are sitting all prim and proper in a chair, with a plate of accompaniments on the table, and having a social event. Biscuits and savouries, anyone?
So yes, coffee is highly regarded in the modern world as the drink of active people. The busy people. People who don’t have time to relax. Or even sit and have a biscuit. Coffee usually must be had when you are walking about from one busy place to another.
But coffee has a class system. You can’t just say you’re a coffee drinker in a crowd of coffee drinkers and expect to be accepted. No, you must prove you know everything about coffee.
Do you know where the beans come from? If yes, which ones do you prefer? Do you have a coffee machine or make it in a pot? What kind of milk do you add? Plant-based or regular cow’s milk? Sugar….in coffee? What strength of coffee do you prefer? Do you even know what a crema is? What about the flavor and notes of the coffee? Citrus or floral? Did you not know that coffee has an aftertaste? Which means you aren’t drinking it properly.
If you have all the answers to these questions, then you are a coffee connoisseur. If not, do you even like coffee?
And if you happen to say you drink instant coffee, get ready to be shunned immediately.
In the coffee world, instant coffee isn’t even considered coffee. You will hear plenty of gasps if you happen to accidentally let it slip out that you like a popular brand of instant coffee.
In the coffee hierarchy, instant coffee is considered to be really low. It’s just freeze-dried granules. Ugh!
But here’s the thing: instant coffee is great!
Not to mention a tad more convenient than making those complicated coffees that practically require a ritual. There are coffee filters to stock up on, pots to clean, saucepans to scrub, and empty capsules to add to the household waste.
Instant coffee requires just a cup and hot water. It’s so easy and gives you a good amount of caffeine boost.
But because it is so easy to prepare, that makes it an unpolished preference. How can you like anything that is so easy to prepare? Making coffee is supposed to take at least half an hour every day. You are supposed to be making a big fuss over half a cup of coffee, or you’re not doing it right. And don’t forget the latte art. You’re supposed to be an expert by now.
This isn’t about calling most coffee drinkers snobbish. It’s about rectifying the wrong equation that puts instant coffee drinkers on the downside.
You can like time-consuming, expensive coffee. But you can also enjoy instant coffee on the side. It won’t sing notes like the other coffee, but it will help you function on an exhausting day and provide the convenience of contributing less to the mess in the kitchen.
So, what is the point of putting coffee in a class system when what you really want is to feel good and energetic, something that even instant coffee can provide.
