Top 10 THINGS THAT GET BETTER WITH AGE

Like seeds in soil, we all grow when we are nurtured. As time passes, the seeds sprout and grows bit by bit until it develops leaves. Eventually, the seed becomes a plant and bears flowers or fruits.

Growth is an important part of life. Things get better or worse with age. But let’s focus on things that get better and better as time passes.

Here are the TOP 10 Things That Get Better With Age:

1) Cheese

Cheeses may start off as mild and creamy, but as they age, they form calcium lactate crystals which gives the cheese its rich, earthy taste. The quality of the cheese, and its overall taste, thus improves. Cheeses that taste good when they are aged are mostly cheddar, gouda and parmesan.

2) Wine

You must have heard of the phrase “ages like fine wine”. In fact, the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of things that get better with age, is wine.

Aging is one of the processes in wine-making. An aged wine has a smoother, well-rounded taste which is why people pay a nice price for wines that have been aged longer.

3) Leather

Leather has always been known to be strong, durable and comfortable which is why many people invest in good quality leather jackets and furniture.

As leather ages, leather, which initially felt stiff, will now feel smoother. There will be some color change as well and it will become richer and deeper. The color change and sheen is called Leather Patina.

4) Movies

We probably never appreciated the movies we saw years ago. But as time passes, those movies turn into classics and we learn to appreciate the unique stories and the simplicity in which they were told.

We also learn to appreciate the acting and the roles played by sincere actors. These stories remain in our mind and are cherished. They become re-watchable and possibly inimitable.

That’s the power of classics.

5) Wisdom

When we are younger, we haven’t developed the sense to look at a situation from another angle. We tend to be impulsive and steadfast. As time passes and we mature, we develop a sense of reasoning from our experiences and learn that things aren’t always what they seem.

Wisdom comes from experiencing and understanding the situations we find ourselves in. It comes from meeting people that either enrich or teach us some hard lessons.

When we go through all of that, then we realize that not every situation requires a forceful reaction. We understand people and choose to either ignore or forgive them rather than look for ways to serve them their “just desserts”.

As we age, our mind grows and we learn to accept and deal with things in a much more dignified manner.

6) Jeans

Denim has always been known to be a durable fabric, one that doesn’t even need to be washed.
Buy a pair of jeans and you will notice that it feels a bit stiff. But as time passes and you wear it often, you will realize that the material feels softer and perfectly fits every contour of your body.

7) Artwork

It’s no secret that art that was created decades ago, is now valued much higher now. The art styles of the past can hardly be replicated because of the cultural and heritage influences depicted of that time.

Since that artwork gives a glimpse of a bygone era, its value has increased over time.

Or take it another way.

When we were younger, the drawings that we made were childish and barely looked like the subject. But as we practised daily, and as time passed, our pen strokes have become firmer and our eye for detail has been enhanced.

Hence, our own artwork has greatly improved with age.

8) Memory

They say memory fades in older people. While a number or ailments and medications can affect memory, some studies show that our semantic memory actually improves.

Semantic memory refers to the knowledge we have accumulated over time which includes meanings of words as well as general facts of the world.

9) Pickles

This goes without saying that pickles taste better only after they have been left alone to process. The more they sit in pickling solution or oils, the more their flavor develops.

But this is not to say that it may be safer to eat ten year old pickles.

10) Confidence

As we age, we learn and experience a lot of things that gradually gives us the confidence to face that situation. Especially when we have faced similar situations in the past.

We learn, we experience, we feel, and we deal with things that help shape the person we eventually become.

With this assurance that any problem can be dealt with, comes the confidence to face any difficult situation head-on.

As we grow older, our confidence regarding the person we want to be and the style of clothes we want to wear, continues to grow.
