TOP 10 THINGS ABOUT ADULTHOOD NO ONE TOLD YOU

So no one told you life was going to be this way. The things we imagined as a kid doesn’t turn out to be the way when we actually being an adult.

As kids, staying up late, living alone, being able to do whatever we want seems so glamorous. We imagine a life where we can do whatever we want, with stars in our eyes. We can’t wait to become adults only to become one and realize this isn’t how things were supposed to turn out.

And before you know it, you badly want someone to tell you what to do but can’t because you are expected to sort out your problems.

So that is what adulthood is. Being solely responsible for literally everything.

Here are the Top 10 Things You Learn When You Reach Adulthood

1) YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING

Everything means, yes, everything. Once we turn into an adult, we are expected to walk outside into the world, find a job or start your own business, and earn money. There are no more freebies. No more parents or guardians paying for your meals. The water and electricity we took for granted…it costs money.

The shoes you want to wear to an important occasion and just now tore…guess what? You have to buy your own shoes now with the money you earn. Whatever is left from your income now goes to paying bills, shopping for groceries, and buying clothes. If there is anything left, you can think about either saving it or spending it on leisure activities.

And don’t forget, you have to pay for medical as well.

2) YOU HAVE TO TEND TO YOUR OWN INJURIES

That cut on your finger, or that scraped knee will no longer bring your parents running to your side with bandages and ointments. You will have to pick up yourself and limp to the medicine cabinet and get a bandage. It helps to know a few First Aid Tips that will come in handy when you are alone and have to take care of yourself.

Also, you will find yourselves slipping a bandage in your wallet or purse whenever you go out because no one is going to fuss over you except you.

3) YOU HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH

As kids, we have someone taking care of us. Every single meal is designed to give you the essential vitamins and minerals that will keep you healthy. So, as kids your immune system is strong because of the healthy and balanced meals you are receiving.

Then you grow up and have to live by yourself and realize you haven’t been feeling your best self. That’s because you haven’t been taking the same meals like you used to. Your meals aren’t as healthy and balanced as they used to be.

The realization is impactful though, and you start to take care of yourself by learning about your body and what you absolutely must include in your diet to stay healthy.

4) YOU HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN THINGS

As kids, we don’t realize how dependent we are on our parents or guardians to take care of not only us but our personal items. So whenever we went on vacation, we never had to bother about where our passport is, our pocket money, or any other important item is. Our parents were there to make sure we never lost anything.
As soon as you turn into an adult, you are suddenly responsible for everything that is important.

You have to take care of your money, passport, and any other expensive items that you carry around with you, especially your keys!

5) YOU CANNOT CRY IN PUBLIC

As kids, we have the privilege of acting out our emotions. If we are angry we can shout and scream. The passersby will just think we are an annoying kid and walk away.
When we are sad, we can cry and people would show sympathy.
Any show of emotion is seen as a way the child is expressing themselves.

But the minute we become an adult, showing any emotion is seen as weakness.

You are told you aren’t mature because you showed your sensitive side to someone.

And so no matter how bad a day is or how terrible the situation is, you learn to hide your feelings. It is better somehow, safer, knowing that you won’t be wrongfully judged for being a human being with emotions.

6) YOU HAVE TO SHOP FOR YOURSELF

As kids, everything we wanted, would magically appear in our kitchen or wardrobe.

We took all these things for granted.

Then you become an adult and realize that coffee you have been craving? You have to buy it for yourself. The soap you need to bathe with, yeah, you have to buy it too, as well as toothbrush and toothpaste. And don’t forget the toilet paper.

You have to buy your own food, clothes, and any gadget that catches your fancy, all by yourself.
Fun isn’t it?

7) YOU HAVE TO SOLVE YOUR OWN PROBLEMS

Had a bad day at work? Don’t know how you’re going to make your rent this month? Your partner isn’t speaking to you?

All these problems and more will become essential to solve and guess what? You have to solve them yourselves. You are not expected to go running to your family in order to find a way out.

Nor is a magical wizard going to come to your aid. Every single problem you encounter will become your responsibility.

8) YOU ARE EXPECTED TO KNOW EVERYTHING

Once you become an adult, kids especially, will expect to you know every detail about the universe. After all, you expected every answer from the adult in your life as well.

So get ready to be asked anything under the sun and failure to answer them will result in you being called a dummy.

But it’s just not the kids who will have expectations from you. You are supposed to know everything about the world around and updated about literal every world event.

If you don’t know something, you are looked down upon and considered as a person who “doesn’t have it together”.

9) YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE

The pushing, shoving, and name calling may have been sort of acceptable when you were a kid, as long as you didn’t do it in front of an adult.

But as an adult, you have to be in perfect control of your emotions. You will encounter a lot of difficult people along the way. Some of them may be your supervisors, your colleagues, your relatives, the doorman, your plumber…the list will be endless.

You will have to learn to deal with difficult people without losing your dignity. You definitely cannot call them names!

10) YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN HAPPINESS AND PEACE

As a kid, whenever you were upset, your parent or grandparent would some to sit next to you, take you to an amusement park or get you some ice cream.

As an adult, you may be sitting in the corner and moping but no one will want to ask how you are doing because they are adults too and have their own set of problems.

You have to realize soon enough that only you can make yourself happy. If you are fortunate to have relationships that have been there since your childhood and are strong till today, good for you.

But you may not always have them. Life can take you anywhere else and you may have to learn to make yourself happy rather than wait for someone to do it for you.

Adulthood can be manageable once you realize that the prime goal is to take care of yourself enough to make yourself happy.
