Epilogue

It was strange how things worked sometimes. Sibyl never thought she would get over the betrayal and the trauma she had endured. The sounds of a madman trotting near her head, the threats whispered into her ear, the pain she was made to suffer, all of it she was certain would live in a quiet corner of her mind. She was sure, that the minute she thought she would be over it, the experience she was made to brave, would jump out of nowhere, dissolving her determination.   But it didn’t happen. She did have nightmares for the next two weeks and she would wake up in the middle of the night, covered in a sheen of sweat. However, that was the extent to it. She was stronger than she realized. Sibyl decided she wanted to go back home. She missed her family and knew that the only way to repair the damage she had done was to fix it. Her father didn’t speak to her for almost a month and at first, she thought he still didn’t want anything to do with her. A month later, one late night when...

Chapter Nineteen

As soon as the paramedics had given her a checkup, they suggested she be taken to the hospital for blood tests. “We need to know what he injected you with,” one of them told her. Adira didn’t turn to look at him. She stared out, at the cold gray afternoon and the grass that looked dull brown. “Just to be sure.” “I want to see my sister,” she said immediately. “Please take me to see Sibyl.” The paramedic nodded. “It’s the nearest hospital. I don’t have any information on that.” Adira felt her heart sink. If only someone would tell her that her sister was doing fine, she wouldn’t keep feeling this heavy ache in her heart. The ambulance rode her to the hospital and, half an hour later, it stopped in front of a large white building. “We are here. Now, let me...” The paramedic began, ...

Chapter Eighteen

The soft shuffle of footsteps beside her head, roused her and her eyelids flickered. It hurt too much to move, even to open her eyes, but Adira strove to pull up all her strength. I am in danger. I was taken. I need to get up and assess the situation. She held her breath and her heart fluttered with terror. She found herself looking out through metal squares and instantly her stomach knotted tight. Her head started to throb when she raised herself and brush her hands against the shiny metal. “I bought it new.” It was that voice again. So familiar, yet she couldn’t place where she had heard it. “I’m glad you’re awake now. You’ve been out for about...hmm...let’s see...twelve hours now?” Adira jerked upright and yelped when the top of her head collided with a hard surface. The sound of metal made her realize she was in a small cage. Grasping the metal bars, she turned all around and saw a skinny man stride up to her. He had curly long hair up to his shoulders and wore thin silver-ri...
