Methods of communication have changed over the years. From letters to phone calls, to emails and chats, we have come to rely on different modes for various situations.
There was a time when phone calls were the most preferred form of communication but more and more people have found the benefits of texting and how reliable they can be.
And if you have phone anxiety, then you will be more than pleased to know that texting can actually come with a lot of benefits.
In case anyone ever judges you for not calling and choosing to text instead, here are the reasons you can use:
1) Avoiding small talk
You know what’s the best thing about texting? You don’t have to spend much time with exchanging pleasantries or talking about the weather. Texting was invented to make everyone get to the point faster.
After the general greeting, texting allows you to get to the crux of the conversation.
The faster you get to the point, the faster you can resolve and end the conversation and move on to other things.
2) Easy to keep records
Forgot what time your friend wanted to meet you? That can happen in calls, and chances are you will have to make a call to your friend again and recheck.
But if it is for a formal meeting, then chances are you may appear unprofessional if you ask for repeated information. You have already proven that you lack focus and cannot memorize important information.
That is why texting is the best!
It helps you avoid those embarrassing moments by keeping records of all your conversations.
Just make sure you keep your messages private and away from prying eyes. And also turn off the disappearing messages option!
3) The option to edit
Did autocorrect accidentally make you send an offensive message? Most messenger apps give you the option to edit your message even after you send it. Or delete it completely if you cannot salvage it.
Calls can be complicated and the reason people have so much anxiety around it is because when you are talking to someone who is not a close friend, and accidentally blurt something, you cannot take it back.
And then you are judged for that blooper. And you have already made a bad impression.
Texting can help you save your reputation!
4) Easier to multitask
The problem with calling people on the phone is that you cannot always multitask. Some tasks require you to use both hands and undivided attention. While wireless earbuds exist, it still doesn’t solve the problem for when you have to talk to someone.
Texting solves all these problems because you are rarely required to give immediate answers. You can talk to someone, perform other tasks, and still be able to send a text, even when you are watching TV.
5) Easier to come up with comebacks
Most of us are saddled with the embarrassment of coming up with the perfect comeback long after the conversation is done and over. The perfect comeback line comes at the most unexpected times, especially during a shower.
While many are trained to dole out comeback lines at the opportune moment, the rest of us only manage to stutter.
Texting solves this problem effectively.
It gives you a chance to pause, search for the perfect comeback line or think of your own, and then deliver it with finesse.
6) Easier to ghost
Feeling overwhelmed and don’t feel like talking? That’s why we have texting.
Texting gives you the option to avoid talking to someone when you don’t feel like it. The best part is that you still receive messages, and you can decide whether they require your immediate response or not. If there is no urgency for replies, you can take a break and focus on you.
With calls you cannot do that. You cannot tell someone mid-conversation that you want to take a break, and not expect the person on the other end to not think you are rude.
7) Privacy
Phone calls require you to speak in a clear and loud voice. Which means, your private conversations are not private unless you lock yourself in a room, something that is not always a possibility.
Texting on the other hand can be done in front of everyone and unless they are peering into your screen, no one will have any idea what you are conversing about.
Many apps offer the option to keep your conversations private through various features and encryption.
8) Convenience
Have something important to say to someone but worried they might be sleeping or busy? Send a message. If they are available, they will reply immediately.
Calls can be seen as intrusive and when someone is busy, they may keep cutting calls which may discourage you from contacting them again.
Texting can actually assist in retaining amiable relationships and you may appear as someone respectful of others’ time and circumstances.
9) Save money
Here’s the best reason why texting is so much better than calling: it is free!
Technically, of course. You will still need a phone, wifi or data.
Calling on the other hand, costs money despite which plan you pick. You are still paying for a plan, and international calls cost a lot!
With texting, you can stay in touch with anyone from any part of the world, all without emptying your pockets.
10) No awkward goodbyes
The conversation has ended and if you are on the phone, you keep trying to steer towards a goodbye but the other person has chosen that moment to digress with another random thought. Before you know it, another fifteen minutes have passed.
With texting, the goodbyes come faster. The point has been made. No one wants to type anymore. A goodbye is sent which is either typed or in the form of a GIF.
Done with messages, you can now focus on other aspects of your life rather than be hooked to the phone.
Texting is truly a winner in this department!
