Top 10 Disadvantages of AI

The world is being taken over by AI, and we don't even realize it.

Artificial Intelligence applications were developed to help us, humans, to live our lives with more efficiency and convenience.

AI drew from psychology and philosophy to understand human speech and help with problem solving and recommendations.

Our lives were supposed to be much more comfortable with the inclusion of AI.

But it has also become a looming threat.

The use of AI can lead to higher productivity as it can perform complex tasks faster and with more efficiency.

But there are disadvantages to this convenience.

Here are the Top 10 Disadvantages of AI

1) People will have to suppress their dreams and do only one thing

Right now, we have the choice to pick a career from a wide spectrum. You can choose to be whomever you want to be and train yourself through a variety of courses available.

But with AI being utilized in workplaces, you will eventually find yourself out of a job if you don't have the right set of skills.

AI is designed to make work processes go smoother and efficiently, but it does require someone to maintain it. The future of jobs appears to lie in computer science or engineering.

You will find yourself no longer asking what you want to be but rather when you should start a course in computers and engineering.

2) Loss of jobs

There are loss of jobs even today, and the unemployment rate in some countries is still high. But AI companies may look to cut costs since the technology they will have to invest in will be high. Besides, companies would prefer using AI to enhance their work practices, which will eventually lead to layoffs in several departments.

Emails will be written by AI. Machines will work faster and longer at factories. Documents will be easily created using AI.
Those who have graduated with a degree in computer science will find themselves competing with several others who have the same degree.

The jobs will still be few because AI will be constantly learning and be updated to eventually replace humans.

3) Loss of culture

Our culture is part of our identity. We learn about our culture through texts and even artwork.

In the future, should AI be given more importance and allowed to create art and write texts, we will lose out on creativity and the originality of every artist that makes their work unique.

AI will produce work that may tick all the boxes of aesthetically pleasing art based on how it is programmed. But it will lack soul and change the way we emotionally connect with art.

4) Make us lazy

Writing emails or typing long documents can be an arduous task.
Creating spreadsheets can be tiresome as well and time-consuming.

Our everyday tasks can take most of our day, be it at work or at home. It can leave us exhausted and frustrated when we don't get to finish our work on time.

AI can finish all those tasks faster and do more. And so our dependency on it will grow to the point that we will be compelled to use it even for the simplest of tasks.

This will leave us with some free time, but that spare time may not be used productively. We will eventually become lazy and dependent on AI to do pretty much everything for us. Maybe even read for us or summarize articles and books so we don't have to spend time doing it.

Remember the movie Wall-E?

5) Less human contact

Currently, companies employ several workers to work in their customer service department. Every business has a department that provides information and support to its customers.

In the future, these jobs will be overtaken by AI. Many company websites have already introduced AI assistants that can quickly direct customers to commonly asked questions.
Currently, AI can not completely mimic human interaction, but in the near future, with the advancement of technology, all of these jobs will be controlled by computer programs.

After all, AI is designed to constantly learn.

It will all lead to a point when we may call a business for inquiry only to be directed to a machine that will be assisting us. The messages will be automated. We may not even realize that we are not speaking to a human but a computer program.

While we may receive direct and concise solutions, we run the risk of losing out on human connections and the pleasure of building a network of like-minded people.

6) Lack of trust since we won't know if we are speaking to a human or robot

As humans, we thrive to achieve perfection or what our idea of perfection is.

For many of us, we consider ourselves flawed as we don't measure up to the standards created by certain individuals, which is now an accepted norm.

The fact is that some people suffer from low self-esteem issues, which will result in them leaning toward a program that can make them appear the opposite of how they perceive themselves to be.

So, in the future, the person you may be speaking to online may not even be a person.

The photo of the person you are searching for online, maybe AI generated. The person you are conversing with online may be giving answers a little bit too efficiently.

Presently, there are ways to find out whether or not you are talking to a robot based on asking some personal questions. But the future of AI leans on learning more about the human that one is interacting with and adapting accordingly.

The person you thought was your best friend online may not even be a person.

7) Lack of imagination

AI requires extensive programming and research. It is meant to produce flawless work and follow all the rules of what is considered to be perfect.

Take, for example, a story written by a human. Sometimes, the sentences will not follow all the grammar rules. It is meant not to so that the dialogues appear more natural. After all, as humans, while conversing with each other, we don't focus on correct grammar usage but on getting the point across.

AI may be a lot of things, but it will always lack the imagination that only a human mind is capable of.

A human mind uses imagination to think of a world that can be more efficient with the use of AI.

Humans created AI, not the other way around.
Our future will be dull if we depend solely on AI and not on the infinite capabilities of the human mind.

8) Raise the standard of beauty if AI is used in films

What is true beauty? The answer actually is that it is subjetcive. What one finds beautiful may not necessarily be to the other.

But over time, the media has decided what beauty is.

The comments on celebrity looks and fashion sense have inadvertently influenced our opinions and led to a lot of people believing that they are not good enough and thus require cosmetic surgery to feel good about themselves.

In the future, TV, movies, and advertisements may not even feature real human beings. Perhaps studios and companies may find it more convenient and cost-effective to use AI than actual human beings.

Of course the AI models will be designed to appear flawless. Perhaps we may not even recognize of differentiate between a computer generated model from a human and end up believing that this is the true beauty standard now.
That standard will be hard to achieve by a human and this may result in low-self confidence and depression.

9) Lack of variety in tastes if they cook

Right now we have several cuisines and several restaurants serving them. Each chef has a unique way of preparing dishes which exposes us to a wide range of culinary preparations for every palate.

Now imagine if these jobs are taken over by AI. All the dishes we taste will have the right amount of seasonings and ingredients. They will all be the same.

AI is designed to follow protocols and not think out of its set of codes. It will not know that adding a particular spice or herb may enhance the taste of a dish.
In the future, our food will not be as inventive and satisfying.

10) No more privacy

Do you believe you have privacy now?
There is already some theories floating about on how we have no privacy if we are online.

Our preferences and our online habits are already being monitored. And sometimes we are the ones who give permission to do so without even realizing it. How many of us read the terms and conditions when entering a site or using an app?

You may have noticed the recommendations you receive on emails or the ads that pop out on a website as soon as you exit a shopping website.

In the future, privacy may become non-existent.

As mentioned before, AI needs to learn constantly and it does so by observing and learning human behavior patterns.
The more we depend and use AI, the more we are giving it permission to learn about us.
We may believe we are enjoying our privacy but in reality, AI is carefully monitoring and indirectly changing the way you buy and invest in things.

Always be careful to the terms you are agreeing to when you are online.
