Top 10 reasons you should spend time on Social Media

Are you spending too much time on social media?

While many would argue that social media can be a distraction from productive work, there are some benefits to social media you should consider.

1) You get to meet new people and make friends with them. In real life, where else would you find the chance to meet someone from another country? Because of social media, you have the opportunity to friend someone that lives on the other side of the globe.

2) Running out of topics to post? Can’t think of anything to post? Chances are you will be hit with a form of writer’s block that you can’t get past. The best way to overcome it is to pick an activity to do that day that you can later write a post about.

Sitting at home doing nothing on a rainy day? How about baking cookies or cleaning that closet?

Because you will want to post on social media, you may find it encouraging to get up and do something exciting to write a genuine post.

3) Posting regularly on social media can keep you disciplined. If you make it a habit to post once a day, that means you just completed one task at least during the day. It will also keep you encouraged to connect with your friends or followers.

4) Run out of book or movie recommendations? Social media can actually be a good way to find out what other shows and movies and books are out there that people have enjoyed and posted about. You might just find your new favorite show/book/movie.

5) Wish you could talk about your favorite sport or movie but can’t find anyone to have that discussion with? On social media, you can find a group that has the same interests and favorites. You may just find your new best friend even if it is in a virtual world.

6) Watching the news can be a little depressing. Posts and memes about current events can soften the blow. Social media is filled with recommendations to pages you should totally check out that will keep you on track with all that is happening in the real world. Checking the current trends on social media helps to stay up to date with what is going on around the world.

7) Are you an author? A filmmaker? An artist? A housewife? Whatever you are doing, posting about your work and your life helps you build an audience and make them aware of what you do. You get to build your brand and identity.

There are several groups for authors who help authors. You can post links to your work and direct potential readers to your books. In the same way, no matter how big or small your business is, social media is the way to go to promote yourself.

8) Wish you knew what your celebrity had for breakfast? Or how do they get so buffed up for that action movie? Now that celebrities are on social media, it is easier to get in touch with them. In some cases, they even reply to your comments. What a wonderful feeling that is!

9) Had a bad day? Going through a difficult illness? Tired of prejudice? Social media makes it easier to write paragraphs about your horrible day. Your online friends may offer sympathy. Whether or not that happens, you at least wrote about what happened and got it out of your system. Maybe somebody read your rant or maybe not, but you sure can believe it was noticed and your voice was heard.

10) Just won a prize? Got that job you really wanted? Had the best day ever?

Sometimes you may find yourself all alone when good news hits. Maybe your family isn’t supportive or your so-called friends are skeptical of your choices, but you get to post your happy moments on social media and your online friends may just be supportive.

Social media can be a great way to find people who believe in you. Whether you get a comment or not, a like can just be as effective.
