So You Finally Decided To Become A Writer. Really?

Congratulations!

You decided to become a writer and you know that is the best decision you ever made.

Now everyone is going to think you are smart and expect you to know every word in the dictionary and also how to pronounce it properly.

Soon enough you will find some of yohr family members and friends deciding to become a writer too because if you can do it, they can do it a lot better and easily.

Every call or message you receive will be about your career choice. Sure, there will be some who will be in awe of you.

They will expect you to know every word in the dictionary and even test you for it. Your general knowledge will be tested as well.

Yes, this part has to be mentioned twice. You will find out for yourself just how true this is.

Most importantly, you will be asked what you are working on.

And that is where you are bound to find yourself stumped.

What exactly are you working on?

Fiction or nonfiction?

Romance?

Drama?

Historical?

Humor?

Horror?

Mystery or Thriller?

By the way, there are subgenres to consider as well.

Comedy Horror. Historical Romance. Romance Thriller. Occult fiction.

And have you thought about the length of your book?

Are you planning a short story or novella or a full-length novel?

There are so many things to consider and a lot to plan.

Also, you distant cousin who you have never heard of but maybe met when you were a baby, thinks he is a better writer than you.

Even though he's working as a sports coach.

Becoming a writer was once considered to be a noble profession. Yes, it still is but it is now seen as the perfect profession to choose if you want to spend days staring into a distance and letting people believe you are a zombie.

It's about being distracted by a story and having all your thoughts occupied by it.

You could be making a cup of coffee for yourself and end up dumping yogurt into it because you just came up with the perfect scene for your book. You just have to write it down now.

You'll also find yourself watching people only to find out you aren't doing it as covertly as you thought. They know you are staring and think you are being a creep even though you were only mentally observing different behaviors that can help you with characterization.

You may also have the perfect idea creep up in your mind when you least expect it. And when you have no access to a pen or paper or even your cellphone.

Good luck with remembering that idea when you are finally sitting down to get some work done.

Oh, and your friends are bound to be nervous around you. They are going to wonder if you are going to use them in a story, especially if it is horror. They may suddenly not want to confide in you and act like there is no other person perfect in this world but them.

You may also find some judging your career choice and cringe whenever you talk about your plans to become a successful writer.

So, do you still want to be a writer knowing that you may not have a great social life anymore? You will have almost no support from the people around you? And that you will find yourself living your book for months until you finally finish it?

Sure you're ready for this laborious journey that will have you making some wrong turns that lead to heartbreak and loss of money and support?

No, don't be discouraged yet. There are some rewards too that you will find along the way.

After all, what is a story without obstacles and the friends we make along the way?

But like in every book, the good stuff, the ending, happy or not so happy, will only be revealed in the end.
