Are You Sure You Want To Be A Writer?

Food on the table. Decent clothes, maybe in fashion or not, but definitely not torn. A dependable roof over your head. Clean, running water. A few basic necessities are items that will make our life easier.

What else could we ask for?

Tons of money, of course.

If you've decided to become a writer, here's what you need to know.

Until and unless you are blessed with good luck, which means you have won a lottery once so far, never fallen into a puddle, always came in first in every competition, and so on, chances are you will find the road ahead challenging.

Of course, if you have always been super lucky, then you should have no problem at all. You will immediately find a publisher, have your work published quickly, and reach the bestseller list in no time.

Being a writer isn't the easiest job in the world. You will have to put in a lot of work trying to become one. On top of it all, you'll get a lot of flak from your family who think you should be earning a degree in anything else but what you are doing right now.

You may even be asked if you know how to write. Why did you think writing would be a good career choice considering you barely made the passing grade in English grammar and creative writing.

Or that you may not be imaginative enough. Or that your talents lie in searching for jobs until you land one that requires you to work long hours and make very little money.

As soon as you announce your career chance, you will find out just who in your family is actually supportive of you. And at least finding out who is on your side is a good thing, right?

So, yes, being a writer is going to be hard, and you will often be made to doubt your own decision and talent. You will have to be very firm in your decision and realize that you are not going to be joining the ranks of accomplished authors immediately.

It will take some time to find your voice and an audience for your work.

Until then you will have to keep finding motivation to work.
