Raise your hands if you have barely managed to push through May? Almost halfway through this year. Almost. Can we survive this entire year? Let’s have a roll call by December.
2026 is still in the running to be the most chaotic year of the decade. Wars, virus scares, high fuel prices, higher cost of living, and let’s not forget the heatwave. Because, why not? Why should we be blessed with comfortable weather?
So here it is, another edition of What’s The Point Of This Month. The Month being May, of course. If you still have your sanity intact, read on.
1) The Virus Scare
We almost went into a global lockdown until we didn’t. In May, the WHO was notified of the rare Andes Hantavirus strain that had infected 13 people and killed 3 of the passengers aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. Action was taken quickly, and some of the passengers and crew were immediately flown to a specialized biocontainment unit, while others were isolated in their home countries and subjected to weekly tests.
Suffice to say, the virus outbreak was contained systematically. Luckily, the virus wasn’t as contagious as COVID. It required prolonged proximity with an infected person to transmit.
But wait...is that Ebola in the distance?
2) Will They, Won’t They?
The world is waiting with bated breath: will the US and Iran finally sign a peace deal and officially end the war? While the two countries navigate a precarious ceasefire, Israel attacked Lebanon, Iraq got involved, the UAE’s Barakah nuclear plant was attacked, but fortunately, the fires were contained on time, and then Kuwait was attacked.
In the midst of all this, the status of the Strait of Hormuz is still a topic of confusion. Is it open? Some ships have been allowed passage. But global fuel prices are still up, and so we must all wait on the sidelines to see when peace will finally be achieved.
3) Russia renews attacks on Ukraine
While Iran and the US are figuring it out, Russia launched fresh new attacks on Ukraine that caused heavy damage. Ukraine retaliated, of course. The US was the primary mediator, but diplomacy has taken a backseat since they are involved in its own conflicts with Iran.
Will 2026 finally see the end of all wars?
4) Cannes and the cancel culture
Did you know Cannes is actually a Film Festival? Except that’s not what news channels report about or what trends online. It’s more about who walked the red carpet and in which outfit. Most importantly, it’s about who took your photograph when you are on the red carpet.
Two indian actresses and ambassadors for L’OrĂ©al captured the most attention, for the wrong reasons. First, it was Alia Bhatt who walked down the red carpet, only for netizens to point out that none of the cameras were pointed towards her.
Fans were irritated that Alia Bhatt’s posters overshadowed former beauty queen Aishwarya Rai who has representated the brand for over two decades.
Aishwarya Rai finally made her presence felt at the Cannes Festival, only for some trolls to point out that she looks 52 years old. Of course, she is 52 years old, but how dare she look like that!
But Aishwarya Rai paid no heed, and her outfits were the talk of social media for quite some time.
5) Ranveer Singh gets banned
Riding high on the success of Dhurandhar and its sequel, the actor found himself in trouble when he walked out of Don 3 weeks before production was about to start. Farhan Akhtar, who co-owns Excel Entertainment, took the issue to FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees), who called the actor thrice, but he snubbed them. Angered by this, FWICE has instructed its 500,000 members not to work with Ranveer Singh. The members include crew, makeup, and lighting.
Until the 45 crore rupees dispute is settled, the ban will continue.
Fans are quick to point out that it is a staged sabotage to bring down the actor who recently starred in a massive box-office hit.
Rumor has it that superstar Salman Khan is trying to resolve the dispute.
Time will tell if the ban is lifted and if Don 3 ever gets made. Or if it even needs to be made.
