What's The Point...of watching Materialists (The Movie)

Just when you thought that romcoms were done for, that they were a genre from the distant past, and now you will never see another love story again, we have MATERIALISTS dumped into the mixing bowl.

Between thrillers and action movies that are taking prominence in the industry, we get a Romance movie that is supposed to take our breath away and believe in true love once more.

But in this cynical and cruel world, does love even exist?

MATERIALISTS kind of changes your perspective. Kind of.

Don’t expect to be blown away, and no it is not the romance story of ages or make you believe in unconditional love again. But it will give you fleeting moments where genuine care is shown that will make you feel…something I guess.

So what is the point of watching MATERIALISTS? Read below and find out.

1) You get to watch a good-looking cast (Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal) uplift a sleepy script.

2) You will see glimpses of realism. Everyone thinks they want unconditional love but apparently that includes being taller than 5 feet nine.

3) You will understand how dating works, and Lucy will explain the maths behind it. After all, dating is hard. Love is easy in comparison.

4) You will discover what goes on behind the scenes in the dating world and how people are recruited to be your partners. It’s all calculations. It’s repeated numerous times, so you don’t forget it.

5) You will also find out the dangers of dating. Think someone has a good career and good salary? Think again. They might be a serial killer in disguise. A boring person pretending to be a stand-up comedian. They might be short and have undergone a procedure to be taller.

6) Most of the movie is about how Lucy doesn’t want to be with John because he’s broke. Midway, she realizes that just because people have money, it doesn’t make them significantly more attractive or deserving of love. So, yes you learn a lot of philosophy and about psychology. It’s almost like being in school. Don’t forget there was a lot of math before.

7) There’s actual character growth. Lucy goes from being materialistic to a little less so towards the end.

8) You will learn how to make rings out of flowers: a great engagement ring idea that is supposed to be super cheap and romantic. Whether or not you will have to replace it with an actual ring remains debatable.

9) You will scoff at Lucy turning down a promotion. She’s still in the early stages of getting back together with John. A few more weeks, and she will want to go to better restaurants and wear expensive clothes again.

10) There’s no cliche background characters getting on with each other towards the end. Thankfully, Harry is not shown pursuing Sophie. They are all on separate dates.

Are these reasons enough to get you to watch the movie? It should be. This is how modern love stories work now, and it is time to get used to it.
