What's The Point... of a New Year with Old Problems?

Happy New Year!
This year is going to be my year!

You told yourself that, didn't you?

Er... how exactly is this going to be your year?

You were fired from your job. Are you getting unfired as soon as it turns on January 1st?
Is your boss recognizing that the new you in the new year is going to bring in more business and win you that prestigious 'Best Employee' title?

Or how about the breakup a week ago? Are you getting back together with a partner who dislikes all your habits but heard you say you're going to be a new person in the new year and take you back?

And all the healthy foods you bought that are now rotting in the fridge. Does that turn "new" too?

January 1st is going to be a new month, a new page on the calendar.

While the year officially changes another number, contrary to popular belief, it does not come with magical powers.

The load of laundry will still be waiting for you on 1st January. The dirty dishes from your New Year's Eve party will not be cleaned by magical elves.

Your house will look like it was hit by a storm or a monster that went on a rampage. Your party guests have long gone, and you're stuck in a messy house with the realization that your so-called friends didn't even offer to help you clean up the mess.

Also, no one replies to your Happy New Year texts. Not even your family who are probably pissed off because you didn't invite them to your party.

The sad realization is that it will be yet another day where the world has declared a public holiday for most but not all.

Some people still have to go to work. The restaurants and supermarkets will be open for you to buy treats and welcome a new year. But for the staff there, they will be doing their job, hoping they will get paid this month.
So you get grumpy stares and forced smiles while you daydream about how the magic of new year will miraculously solve the previous year's problems.

You could have planned an adventurous hike but instead have your plans thwarted by rain. The clouds had no idea you had all these high hopes for the new year. They don't know you've finally decided to take your health seriously. All they know is to gather and make rain and flood some areas and roads so that you're stuck in traffic.

So...what is the point of the New Year when your old problems refuse to leave you?

Your wallet knows you splurged on drinks and junk food. Your bank balance has taken a hit, and money will not be pouring in as soon as January 1st comes along.

The calendar doesn’t have magical powers, but you might. Stop waiting for the date to change your life and start scrubbing the dishes yourself. The only way to get rid of old problems is to actually solve them, one plate at a time.
