What’s The Point Of...Paying to Stay Employed?

We study, we stress, we sacrifice our leisure time to focus on building a future. We spent thousands to get a degree from reputed institutions just so we can be employable.

Often, we migrate, adapt, and assimilate, all for a better opportunity, and all for the future we want to build for us and our family.

And then one fine day, you discover that you now have to pay to stay employed.

It isn’t a hiring fee, nor for a promotion, but just to allow you to stay in a country you don’t belong to.

It hits you like a gut punch, realizing that you invested time and money into building something that turned out to be a sand castle in a storm of politics.

You realize that all this time, when you thought you had made something of yourself, built all that confidence and worth, only to now be told you are not allowed to dream. That very moment takes your power away.

You were a big fish in a shallow pool, and now you are being told to go swim in a pool where you came from.

So, what is the point of investing in a job that doesn’t protect your future?

What is the point of uprooting yourself, hoping that the grass is greener on the other side, only to be told that you must pay to even see the garden? And of course, it won’t be a one-time fee. You’ll have to pay every single year.

Now, you’re not only questioning your life choices, but your employers are wondering if you’re worth the price. You stopped being a human a long time ago. As soon as you enter the job market, you are a commodity. Your worth is based on how much money you spent on your education. Your experience level is based on how much free time you didn’t utilize.

As long as you were working constantly, without even a gap of months to take a career break, you have value. If you spent thousands at prestigious colleges, that is even better. But even with all of this, you will still be judged on your worth to the company.

Your life’s decision will be made for you.

You will be left lamenting the sick leaves you forfeited, the weekends you gave up, all to show your loyalty towards a company that is now weighing its options on whether you will be worth keeping or not.

So, what is the point of investing all your time and energy in a job?

Maybe it’s time to ask what kind of future is worth building, and who gets to decide.
