Watch the news, they say. It will keep you updated on world events. It will keep you well-informed.
Instead, all that following news has done is make you feel overly-stressed out and informed about the things you didnāt want to know in the first place.
Did you really want to know that a woman lost her purse in the foodcourt? Or a dog pooped on the jogging track?
Not to mention, news reporters occasionally exaggerate and dramatize events to make them more than what they actually are. For example, they will report on a catastrophic event that could end the world. Only the asteroid misses the earth and we later find out that it was nowhere near our planet in the first place.
No wonder many call reading the news ādoom-scrollingā. Following the news is rarely informative and is mostly stress-inducing.
Here are the TOP 10 Reasons Why You Should Avoid the News
1) Ignorance is Bliss
Yes, there is much going on now. In your home, your city, your country. But through the news, you find out that there is more going on in other countries as well. At this point, when you have your hands full with juggling household budgets and worrying about rent, the less you know the better!
2) Headlines can spoil your day
Headlines are meant to be catchy and make your heart stop momentarily. Or so it seems. Itās always Breaking News! The World is on the Verge of Collapse! Catastrophe hits!
It is when you read the subheading that you realize that nothing awful is actually happening. The breaking news is something that was reported a week ago. The world is not going to collapse and someone thought it was a good idea to list catastrophes in a marketing campaign for a bottle of water.
But by now, youāre all worked up and donāt feel like doing any of your daily relaxing activities.
3) You will have unique conversation topics
While everyone is talking about the current global crisis or politics, you can be the only one who has something else to talk about, making you the interesting one.
It can be about what your cat did or the new brand of cereal youāre trying.
Suddenly, you have everyoneās undivided attention because youāre talking about something that isnāt depressing.
4) You will have new ways to start conversations
Rather than starting every conversation with ā Did you hear about what happened in so and so city?ā You can have a normal conversation about how itās too foggy to drive in the morning.
5) Be the Last One to Know
As soon as some incident occurs, everyone is talking about it. Every news channel finds a way to overly dramatize the situation several times in a day to create an impact.
By the time the incident is resolved, you should allow yourself to take a look. After all, now you know what is going to happen next rather than spend days wondering how the issue is going to be resolved and when.
6) Youāll get to stop doing math
Thereās so much to calculate on a daily basis, and now you have to deal with inflation rates, interest rates, and so on. You thought you were getting a reprieve from math calculations after school, but guess what, you still have to do it if you keep watching the news.
Say no to all of that and skip the news.
7) You already know the weather
Your phone informs you of the current weather forecast anyway, so why do you need to wait for it to come on the news channel? Itās a long wait to the weather segment and then it takes another couple of minutes before you find out the forecast in your city.
8) Clickbait
News articles are generally clickbait. Thereās always a headline about a random person going to the store and then, āYouāll never guess what happened.ā
Curiosity compels you to click the article, and then what happens? You read a 1000-word essay on a personās life before finding out at the very end that the person found their favorite flavor of ice cream in the store.
Clickbait articles are used heavily when reporting celebrity news only to find out that the celebrity gave a vague answer to a controversial question. Skip the clickbait articles and use your free time to do something else. Like playing a game on your phone.
9) You will sleep and dream better
Without realizing it, a news story has crept into your subconscious mind and manifested into an odd dream that completely ruins your day. Skip the news and watch something fun and entertaining that will give you better dreams.
10) Memes are better
News channels and news websites spend a lot of time conceiving the perfect headline that makes you want to read or know further. Thatās what headlines are there for. They have a larger and bold font and call for action, in this case, calling the viewer to click on their videos or articles.
Instead of going through all of the stressful news that is given out in solemn tones and dramatic background music, choose to visit meme sites or look up memes on social media.
You can still be well-informed while also getting a chuckle. Memes are the best way to avoid the stress that accompanies depressing news.
