So you had a bad day, and you're trying to cheer yourself up. But nothing works.
Bad days are like a sudden storm that appears out of nowhere, soaks you completely, and just when you think it's over, Lightning and thunder boom again.
Before you can search for shelter, you're drenched again.
There are dozens of reasons behind a bad day, and while it's okay to reach for a self-help book to cope, it's also okay to look after your needs first.
Here are some bad day remedies you can try:
1) Scream it out: Holding onto your temper is just going to make you sick. Have a reaction in front of anyone, and everyone judges you for being unhinged.
So go find a private place, or sit in your car, and scream out your frustrations. Or sing really loudly to ease your frustrations. Whatever works.
2) Come up with new curse words: The normals one are overused, and you've already tried them out without result. So the best thing to do is to come up with some unique curse words that have the desired effect, the effect being you feeling satisfied and happy again.
Or, at the very least, come up with an absurd curse word that makes you laugh.
If you come up with an inventive curse word, you can use it in front of people without them understanding what you're saying. Or let your closed ones on the secret so that they too can have a laugh.
3) Get Writing: You know how they tell you to write down stuff in a diary to vent.
How about instead of writing all your complaints, you write all the things that could go wrong but didn't.
Yes, your toilet broke, but it didn't happen when you had to use it urgently. Yes, you mixed up colours in the laundry, but at least your new shirt didn't get that badly splotched.
Try looking at the bright side. Really... try.
4) Blame the stars and planets: Hey, it's not your fault your car didn't start today. It was because of the alignment of planets. Mercury is pretty much always in retrograde. So this bad day that has turned into a week will end once the planets are back to minding their own business.
5) Talk to Something: Yes, you read that right. Talking to someone can help unless the other person happens to be judgmental or condescending about what you're going through.
In that case, talk to something. It could be that plush toy that has been your companion since childhood, or it could be your plants or your favourite cushion or pillow.
The best part? They can not talk back, and what you need at the moment is someone, correction, something that listens.
6) Treat Yourself: You're having a bad day, but that doesn't mean you have to have a bad meal as well. Nothing heals a bad mood like a treat. Order your favourite treat, even if it is dessert, and eat it all while watching your favourite show.
7) Play a kids' game: Remember how things seemed easier and fun as a kid? Give yourself a break and spend the next 30 or 60 minutes playing a kids' game. Play hide and seek, play with action figures, or build a Fort or castle.
You deserve a little fun.
8) Set a reasonable goal: When everything feels wrong and everything you do seems to turn into a turd, why not make a list of small accomplishable tasks that will make you happy?
It can be as good as getting up and taking a shower. Or make a snack for yourself. Or just reading one page of a book you recently bought but haven't gotten to it yet.
Small steps. Baby steps if needs be.
9) Write a song: You may not have talent for singing and songwriting, but that shouldn't stop you from belting out a song about the awful day you had. And if someone was the cause of it, then bring them into the song too. Dedicate an entire paragraph to them and how awful their existence in your life is.
It's your song... just don't sing it in front of anyone, and remember you have neighbours who don't want to be bothered by your act of cathartic singing.
10) Dress up: You may have had an awful day, and you just want to get into your bed and pretend the world doesn't exist.
But it does. And you exist in that world, and the people who annoy you are also going to be present in your life.
You can't do anything about that, but you can take care of yourself. Wear your favourite outfit. Pretend you're the king or queen of your house/room/space. Nobody can take your peace and practice your attitude by wearing your favourite outfit and doing a strut as if you're in a fashion show.
That will not only help you gain your confidence back but also ensure that no matter how bad your day gets, at least you are there for yourself. And it's up to you to always make yourself happy by doing the goofiest things.
