Why Remakes are Not Such a Bad Idea

You may have noticed that nowadays, every third movie is a remake.

Remakes were considered to be a reimagining of classics for the newer audience, although it isn't as widely accepted by film enthusiasts.

Well, here are some reasons why remakes are actually not such a bad idea.

1) There are no more original ideas.

It is better that a movie is remade than suffering through an unintelligent movie.

Would you rather pay a hefty fee to go see a movie in a theatre that you thought was going to be good only to find out that the plot was shoddy and you already spotted a dozen plot holes in the first half?

Isn't it better to watch a movie that has the story down pat?

The reason there is a remake of that movie is because the story worked and was widely accepted and appreciated by the audience.

2) Not everyone wants to read subtitles. Reading can be hard.

More often than not, remakes are made of foreign-language movies. Those movies are available to watch on streaming services, but they come with subtitles.

It can be distracting to read and watch at the same time. It does take the fun out of watching a movie when an exciting part is taking place, but you were reading the subtitles to understand what is going on.

Remakes will solve that problem for you. The actors will speak in the language you understand, making you finally able to enjoy the story.

3) You can read the spoilers beforehand and not put yourself through suspense.

If you haven't watched the original, and if it is a suspenseful movie, you can easily find spoilers online. Someone somewhere has watched the movie, and you can read what happened beforehand if you're one of those people who needs to know everything beforehand and finds mysteries annoying.

Read the spoilers, watch the remake, and enjoy yourself.

4) It is a tried and tested formula. You will not be offended.

The movie was remade because it was widely popular. When it was released, everyone loved it so much, and not one person complained about how offensive the premise was.

Chances are, you won't be either. So go ahead and enjoy the movie without any concerns.

5) Once the project is announced, you can make a game about which character will be gender-swapped and will be of which race.

You know what can be a fun game you can play with your friends? A game about what changes the remake will include. Will it be a character who was originally male and is now not?

Maybe it is replaced by an animal, or maybe that role is cut out entirely.

6) You get to complain about how the original was better.

One of the most common comments about a remake is that the original was better.

When you return from watching a movie and feel compelled to write a review, you can include this sentence, and immediately, a lot of people will agree or disagree with you. It's a great ice breaker for when you want to start an online discussion with strangers you meet online.

7) The remake will bring the story in a modern setting

Classics were classics for a reason. The simplicity is what sold the movie. The movies from the sixties to late eighties barely had any technology devices, which means the stories were more complex.

In a horror movie, especially, two friends could not communicate regarding a serial killer on the loose if they were not at home and close to their landlines. There were no mobile phones.

In a modern setting, the writers will have to include all the current technology and gadgets available to connect with the audience. The story is, therefore, altered and quite possibly, for the best.

Now, if there is a serial killer on the loose, watch the friends warn each other but are unable to do so because a software update came up on their phones making it unusable.

8) You already like the story beforehand

One of your favorite stories from your childhood is being remade. Won't it be amazing to see who will be cast and how the story will be reimagined for the new generation?

You already love the story, and there is no way the new writers could have ruined the basic premise, at least. This makes the movie a safe bet to watch on movie nights or even pay for a ticket to watch in cinemas.

9) Plot holes can be fixed

You may have watched the original movie and wondered why the girl did not hide the book of secrets in a better place. Or why was the character on the way to his friend's house when he said he was going to be in another city during the weekend?

Those annoying little plot holes can be fixed! In the remake, the new writers will go through the story and fix anything the audience had complained about at that time. Won't it be nice to see the characters realize that there is a shark in the sea and decide not to take the boat there only to fly on a plane that crashes in that very place?

Let's see what happens next!

10) Outdated themes can be fixed

For a long time, women were not seen as members of society who could have a mind of their own and speak out against injustice.

If they did, they were labeled as tomboyish or impetuous.

Now that we live in modern times, the female characters that were once subdued and had minimal dialogues may now get major parts. They may be labeled as strong characters if done right.

Modern stories may also be inclusive of other groups of people who come from different beliefs and cultural backgrounds.

It will be interesting to see how a classic can be molded to include a fresh wave of ideas.
