Social media can be fun. It definitely started off as fun and a grand way to connect with friends all over the world.
But over time, social media has become a place of lies and annoyances. Anyone is ready to do anything for likes. Even go as far as to waste your time.
Here are the TOP 10 Ways Social Media Can Be Annoying
1) People you may know
No. I don't want to know them. And if I wanted to know them or keep in touch, I would have made the effort to add them.
Social media can be so demanding and pressurising you to connect with people you don't want to be friends with.
You can try changing your settings or cancel the bar that shows up, but the next day, it is back again, suggesting people you should be friends with.
2) Cooking videos
Cooking videos can be relaxing to some and informative to those learning to cook. But more often than not, the cooks in the video take their own sweet time to cut and chop and fry. Some editing could work, but then you are supposed to be engaging with the video for several minutes, so that the person who owns the page makes money.
And let's not get started on how none of the recipes turn out the way they are supposed to. Apparently, there is some heavy editing going on behind the scenes, and sometimes the chef will order outside food and pretend they made it.
3) Clickbait Headlines
You won't believe what happened next! This movie just recreated a scene from a previous movie! It's a mystery that has puzzled scientists for ages!
Clickbait articles get your attention, but when you actually go on to read the 2000-word article, it's a lot of generic sentences and news pieces of things you already know.
Sandwiched between useless pieces of information are two sentences explaining how the mystery was never solved after all.
All you would have ended up doing is wasting time.
4) Perfect influencer lives
Influencers rarely influence. Rather, they show off their luxury lifestyle that makes you feel inferior to yourself.
They all have perfect skin "before" they apply any makeup. As it turns out, they are using filters.
They are always travelling first class and live in expensive apartments that they keep showing off.
The ironic part is when they pretend to be completely down-to-earth and relatable.
It feels like the ultimate mocking of your social status.
5) Like this if you're a true friend
No, I would rather not be.
You may have noticed posts that are copied and pasted on someone's profile. They will be heartfelt and move you. Towards the end of the post, there is always a "like and share" instruction that makes you realize that you were taken for a ride.
The poster did not experience any of those things and simply copied and pasted from someone else.
It's aggravating when people force you to prove your friendship by liking and sharing their posts.
6) Overuse of hashtags
The caption will have two lines and, below that, a dozen hashtags so that people have no choice but to see it because at least one irrelevant hashtag is included.
Sometimes, a currently trending hashtag is used that has nothing to do with the post.
7) Staged Prank Videos
These two-minute videos start off with a guarantee to make you laugh. One of the people in the video looks at the camera, puts a finger on their lips, and then proceeds to draw on their sleeping friend or place whipped cream in their hand.
Then they wake them up and end up being splattered with cream.
All of it is staged, of course. The prank has backfired, but if you think about it, once you wake up from a nap, are you disoriented or completely aware of your surroundings and have the best reflexes?
Staged pranks are not funny and are a waste of time.
8) Vague Posts
Sometimes, people look for attention by posting a single sentence on their wall so that their friends get worried sick and keep asking what's going on.
People thrive on getting attention on social media by pulling off such tricks.
Usually, it's: Today was a bad day. Please send prayers.
Friends panic and wonder if the poster is in the hospital.
If people want to share their lives on social media, can they write precisely what went wrong? Why must they leave friends guessing for five hours before finally responding to them?
9) Apology Videos
An influencer or celebrity makes an offhand remark or comes off as tone deaf, and then decides to make a five-minute video apologizing for their behaviour.
Most times, it's not even an apology. It's more of a: I'm sorry you didn't understand the joke.
The videos are made with a plain background, or they are in their kitchen or farm, wearing plain clothes so that they can appear "relatable."
10) Fitness Posts
Great, a celebrity or a friend lost five kgs in a month. They then post exercise videos or diet charts, making you feel guilty for that one candy bar you had last week.
Turns out, the celebrity has been using illegal medicines to drop weight and has gone under the knife.
But they will show themselves in gym clothes, without a drop of sweat, and chugging water from a gallon bottle to show how dehydrated they are after an immense workout.
Don't fall for that!
