What’s the Point of Reporting a Death the Star Debunks?

It is with deep regret that I must inform you that so-and-so celebrity has passed away. Let’s look back at their life in pictures.  Except…wait a minute…did that celebrity just send out a tweet about enjoying ice cream at the beach? Has social media turned into a tool for ghosts to communicate through? Nope. It’s yet another example of reckless journalism, driven by the pressure to be first instead of being an authentic news source. It’s all about TRPs and getting enough views and likes for posts about celebrities who have just passed away. But of course, they haven’t, as evidenced by their recent posts or statements from their families and friends.  Death hoaxes have not been invented recently. In fact, it goes back to decades when famous writer Mark Twain was reported to be dead, only for him to come out and state it himself that he was very much alive.  Many famous celebrities have been 'killed' on the news, deceiving viewers who rely on these channels for relia...

What's The Point? Backlash over a jeans ad

There was a time when people raised their voices for things that actually mattered. History is proof that when people rallied together and spoke against tyranny or fought for equal rights, it worked.

Today, a lot of us live with the right to have our words heard, to be able to wear what we want, and to live the life we want because of the people who raised their voices for us.

A lot of us may not realize this, but freedom of speech is a privilege that a lot of people around the world still do not have, even though we would like to think they do.

But this freedom, to use our words to create an impact is often misused. Now it’s hardly ever used to raise awareness against injustice or to bring to light a crime that has been committed in the shadows.

What are voices being used for? To complain about something we didn’t like online. A short or a musical piece is ridiculed because someone thinks it has a hidden meaning. The content creator apologizes and then creates yet another “offensive” content to get views.

There are a lot of things to get offended by, most recently a jeans ad that was ridiculed because it was perceived differently. We all have our individual perspectives and thought processes, but that didn’t stop some people from pointing out that an ad offended them because they are 100% sure it has a subliminal racist message.

The tagline: Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans, was blown out of proportion.

A lot of people were sure she was suggesting that her race was superior, and that the message actually meant that she had great genes.

You know what genes are responsible for? Yes, our physical attributes, but also our health conditions. If Sydney Sweeney has great “genes,” then maybe we should be happy for her? That would mean she is less likely to suffer from genetic disorders.

Instead, the backlash against her has been because everyone chose to believe that she was talking about her race.

The tagline is that she has great jeans, and even if it is supposed to be taken as “genes”, nowhere does it say that she has better jeans. Now that would be a problem.

We can all choose to believe that we have great genes. No matter the race, physical attributes, or anything, why don’t we all choose to believe that we do have great genes and deserve great jeans?
